Common Electric Cooker Faults

Electric cookers are an essential part of any kitchen, but they can develop faults over time. Below, we explore some of the most common problems and their causes to help you identify the issue and decide on the next steps.
Oven Not Heating Up
If your oven isn’t warming up, it’s often due to a malfunctioning component. The heating element, which generates heat, might need replacing if it’s damaged or burnt out. Another possible culprit is the thermostat, which controls the oven’s temperature. Faults in the timer or control panel can also prevent the oven from operating correctly.
Hob Not Working
A hob that doesn’t work could stem from a faulty element that fails to heat up. Additionally, a malfunctioning hob switch may prevent the controls from responding, while damaged or loose wiring could disrupt power to the hob entirely.
Oven Door Won’t Close
A door that refuses to close properly can significantly impact your oven’s performance. This issue might be caused by worn-out or broken door hinges, which stop the door from aligning correctly. A damaged door latch could also prevent the door from locking into place. In some cases, a faulty door seal can lead to heat escaping and uneven cooking results.
Oven Light Not Working
If the light inside your oven has gone out, the most common reason is a burnt-out bulb, which is simple to replace. However, if the problem persists, it may be due to a damaged light socket that requires professional repair.
Oven Fan Not Working
A faulty oven fan can cause overheating or inconsistent cooking. The fan motor might be worn out, which stops it from functioning altogether. Alternatively, the fan control system could be at fault, failing to regulate its operation effectively.
Oven Not Cooking Evenly
If your food is coming out unevenly cooked, the problem might lie with the oven’s heating element, which could be working only partially. The thermostat may also be malfunctioning, leading to inconsistent temperature regulation. A broken oven fan can prevent heat from circulating evenly, while something as simple as using the incorrect shelf position can also affect cooking results.
